Why your website needs a blog
When it comes to promoting a business online, the first thing we usually think about is social media marketing. And when it comes to choosing a medium for your content, video seems to be the top choice right now.
We create videos for YouTube, Facebook, Instagram, LinkedIn and other platforms. But one thing many entrepreneurs tend to overlook these days is setting up a blog for their business.
Does anyone even read blog posts any more? Is it still worth having a blog? The answer is most definitely yes!
Apart from being great reading material for your audience, blogs are also a comprehensive collection of your content and a place for your followers to engage with you on your website.
Here are eight important reasons why every single business, whatever their type, niche or industry, NEEDS a blog.
This post was originally recorded as a video, watch it below if you prefer that to reading!
1. Having a Blog Brings More Traffic to Your Website
Having a blog ensures that your videos and websites will be found more easily and by more people.
A blog is an awesome boost for search engine optimisation (SEO) and will help you rank higher in search engines like Google. This is because search engines like and rank fresh content, especially if it is text-based.
The bottom line is that as long as you’re creating new, written content on a regular basis and optimising it for SEO, you will attract more traffic to your site, and in turn, be able to reach more people with your products and services.
2. Many people still love to read
Video is everywhere right now, across every social media platform and is definitely THE content medium of the moment. But this doesn’t mean that people don’t like to read articles anymore. Quite the opposite, many people love to read blog posts.
Your audience will have different preferences when it comes to consuming content. Yes, for some, video will be their first choice. But there will always be those who prefer to read or listen to their information, so bear that in mind when you’re thinking about how you’ll deliver your content.
3. Blogging Builds Trust Between You and Your Readers
Publishing regular articles on your website helps to build a relationship with your readers - your ideal clients or customers. It also helps to establish you, your website, and your business as an expert in your niche.
Over time, you can build up a whole library full of useful content, without necessarily giving all your important information away. Then, the more you post and become recognised in your field, the more likely it is that your site will become the go-to place for that topic.
As long as you are producing quality content, your readers are more likely to comment on and share your articles with their audience, which will bring in even more traffic.
People are more likely to trust and visit your blog if their friends have shared it first. This is because readers tend to trust their friends’ opinions more than any ads!
Having a catalogue of useful and informative articles on your site not only establishes trust between you and your readers but, when done correctly, can generate a lot of traffic for you too.
4. You Can Use Your Blog to Share Information or News
Blogging allows you to produce a lot of readily-available content for people to read when they need it.
As an added bonus, having a blog allows you to collect all your content in one place and redirect people wherever you’d like them to go. This means you can:
Answer Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)
A blog is a great opportunity to publish information you want to host on your website, but that could confuse or overwhelm your reader if you were to try to include it all on a static page.
For instance, writing an article about a frequently asked question helps educate your readers and saves you time answering questions individually.
Publish news
You can also use blog posts to highlight time-sensitive content and key events for your business. It doesn’t make sense to include this type of current information in the static pages of your site because you’d be updating it all the time! But just because something may not be relevant in the future isn’t a reason not to write about it at all, and a blog post provides the perfect place for you to do that.
Add background information
You can use your blog to share background information about your company, your team and your products or activities. Give people a chance to get to know you and your offerings, without clogging up your website with non-essential information.
5. Use Your Blog to Build Your Mailing
It’s often said “the money is in the list”...your email list, that is! Being able to collect people’s data and email them directly is more valuable than having followers on any platform - or even traffic to your website.
You own your mailing list, which means that you’re not at the mercy of a social platform that may decide to shut down or change the rules. Also, an email is a direct line to the inbox of your audience, making it the perfect opportunity to create a connection.
Writing blog posts to direct people to your lead magnets (opt-ins/freebies) rather than just sending them to a sign-up form and hoping for the best can really improve your mailing list sign-up rates.
In exchange for their email address, offer your readers a free download of useful information to help them solve a particular problem. You can include an opt-in form at the end of your article or place a relevant sign-up link directly in the body of your blog post. Once people subscribe, then they’ll be on your list for any of your future announcements and newsletters.
6. Repurpose Your Blog Posts Into Other Content - And Vice Versa
There are so many things you can do with a written article that require minimal effort but bring maximum results.
You can repurpose your blog post content into:
An eBook to sell online
Newsletters/email shots for your subscribers
A video to put on YouTube or Facebook
Podcasts for clients who prefer to listen to information
And that’s just a few ideas.
Having a variety of media to cater to all your followers, whether they prefer to read, watch or listen, is a great way to reach out to and attract more potential customers.
The other way around works as well; if you enjoy creating videos, you can turn them into a blog post - or just write a short introduction for SEO purposes, and then embed the video itself into your blog post. (See no. 8 for more on why this is a really good idea)
7. Share Your Blog on Social Media to Establish Credibility
We’re always on the look-out for something fresh and interesting to read on our social media platforms.
Linking to your blog posts from your social media platforms is a great way to drive more traffic to your website.
Sharing your articles will establish your expertise even more and will build trust with your followers. This works especially well in the case of Pinterest because Pinterest’s number one purpose is to get traffic to your website.
8. Use Your Blog As Your ‘‘Content Database’’
The most important reason for having a blog is this: your blog is a place where you can host ALL of your content.
One of an entrepreneur’s worst nightmares is to wake up in the morning and discover that our Facebook page, Instagram account or YouTube channel has been hacked, blocked or deleted. Social media platforms could change their rules and policies, and the following you may have spent years building up and creating a connection with could simply disappear.
If you have your own website (and you keep a backup of this), it’s extremely unlikely that all your content will disappear overnight. If you have a blog on your website and are creating content for it regularly, people will still be able to find you.
